Introduction

Purpose

The Department of Human Service Programs’ Planning and Development (P+D) division has been working with Code for Boston volunteers and organizers to develop a tool, drawing on existing information sources including the division’s Directory of Resources for People Homeless in Cambridge, designed to quickly connect people experiencing homelessness with local services able to meet their urgent needs.

Background

P+D has long been responsible for a number of collections of information on homeless-serving programs in Cambridge, including the Directory of Resources for People Homeless in Cambridge, the Cambridge-Somerville Resource Guide, and a set of custom Google maps. Other organizations have also produced relevant guides, including the Cambridge Women’s Commission’s You Find Your Strength Guide, Spare Change News’ HUB Resource Guide, and many others. However, all of these resources have struggled with some or all of a handful of challenges: they contain a great deal of information, potentially overloading the reader; the information presented is the same for any reader, regardless of relevance to her or his needs or eligibility; and maintaining the accuracy of the information both is challenging in and of itself and requires an official “update” to disseminate the revisions.
